We got <a href=\"http:\/\/www.neh.gov\/news\/archive\/NEH_Grants_Jul10_List.pdf\">a $40,000 matching developing grant<\/a> [pdf]\u00c2\u00a0from the <em>extremely competitive<\/em> National Endowment for the Humanities.  We <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsengine.net\/fs\/current_projects\/the_search_for_general_tso\/\">need your help<\/a>. We have a few weeks to unlock\u00c2\u00a0$13,000+ of that grant. (All the paperwork is due in February). Your donations are tax deductible since it&#8217;s a non-profit. Our fiscal sponsor is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsengine.net\/fs\/current_projects\/the_search_for_general_tso\/\">Arts Engine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That NEH grant, along with generous seed donations, actually helped fund our trip to Taipei to interview the chef who <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fortunecookiechronicles.com\/blog\/2010\/12\/20\/finding-the-chef-behind-general-tsos-chicken-with-the-documentary\/\">invented General Tso&#8217;s chicken, C.K. Peng, last month<\/a>. Chef Peng is 93, so this was an extremely important interview to do ASAP. And it was hilarious. He&#8217;s a Qing Dynasty military hero from Hunan province whose Chinese name is Zuo Zongtang (\u00e5\u00b7\u00a6\u00e5\u00ae\u2014\u00e6\u00a3\u00a0). Zuo is roughly pronounced \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcjuoh.\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Here is a picture of him below from a billboard outside his hometown.<\/p>\n<p>And yes, there were a lot of chicken in that town.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fortunecookiechronicles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/01\/generaltsoonwelcomesigninxiyinghunancloseup.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fortunecookiechronicles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/01\/generaltsoonwelcomesigninxiyinghunancloseup.jpg\" class=\"alignnone\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So to show our appreciation.
